This terrifies me.Matthew Shepard Online Resources - Religious Right Hate Speech - Nazi Propaganda vs. Religious Right Anti-gay Rhetoric

Suicide on the Installment Plan: "'Homosexual behavior is suicide on the installment plan. To elevate anal penetration to the level of civil marriage is like telling a drug addict that his self destructive lifestyle qualifies him to be a pharmacist.'"
...And telling a Rich, Right-Wing Wacko-Uber-Christian he's qualified to lead other impressionable individuals is like telling a Terrorist he's allowed to fly planes because of his "dedication."

This isn't about anal sex. As I'm sure this guy's wife could probably tell us, there are many marriages that aren't about sex at all. Sex is not the point of marriage. That's what college is for. Marriage is about love, respect, family, having someone to take care of, and who can take care of you. Having someone you know so deeply, it surprises you when they teach you something about yourself. Having someone you can argue with, and still be able to crawl up and cuddle with in bed.

We need homosexual marriage in this country to protect the sanctity of marriage. Heterosexuals have taken marriage and drug it thru the ground. These homosexuals that want to get married REALLY KNOW WHAT MARRIAGE IS ALL ABOUT. They've been together for years. They're not just getting married for the sake of getting married. They're getting married because their unity, their bond is so intense, so holy that marriage is the only thing that makes sense. In my family, there are many very beautiful, sanctified marriages between two loving, respectful people interested only in being true to one another forever. My parents are one example. However, if you look at my father's side of the family, we have example after example of what has become of marriage in today's society. Marriage "just cuz" someone got knocked up. Marriage because they were young and stupid, and really wanted to be able to screw whenever they wanted. Marriage that just didn't make sense. I think that these homosexual marriages will actually STRENGTHEN marriage in our society. These are people who are more committed to eachother than my Uncle Billy and Aunt Marie were, or my Uncle Ken and Aunt Karen. These people know true and deep love, love that is becoming less and less common a prerequisite for marriage anymore. They prove that two people really can get together and stay together for the right reasons. Not just cuz someone's got a bun in the oven, or someone's father won 1/3 of 6.2 million in the lottery, but because they know its the right thing to do.
These examples of good marriages will serve as good role-models for our youth that is so quickly getting used to the idea of broken homes and loveless marriages. Religious nuts want to tell us that homosexual marriage will destroy the vary sanctity of marriage. Well, Jerry Falwell/Fred Phelps, as much as I'd REALLY LIKE to do something like that, looks like you heteros have beat me to it. Maybe homosexual marriage will actually return some of the sanctity back to marriage. We'll see.

Alright, I'm in the middle of Al Franken's book, and he has a big chapter on the 2002 election (which I voted in, where were you?) in which the republicans made a huge deal of the "hijacking" of a memorial for Paul Welstone, a Minnesota Senate candidate (which by the way was ONLY aired on CSPAN ONCE) and the "booing" of senator Trent Lott. Franken gives the republicans that there was some booing for the entry of Trent Lott (even though there was none for Coleman, Wellstone's competitor) and gives a website where you can watch the whole thing here. At 1:18:22, when Trent Lott shows his big fat face, you can supposedly hear some boos. However, I listened, and I didn't hear a SINGLE GOD DAMNED BOO! I know my sound isn't that off, because when I backed it up to 1:17:00, when you can see President Clinton enter, the song is no longer audible with the cheers for him. so obviously if "20,000 people" booed Lott (who was by the way at the time also about to field some really nasty "allegations" of racism when he suggested that the world would be a much better place if Segregatonalist presidential candidate Strom Thurmond had won is bid for the presidency) I would be able to at least hear it a LITTLE Bit when I turn my computer up all the way. But, alas, NOTHING is audible AT ALL. You try it. If you can hear all those boos that the republicans were talking about, then I guess then that Limbaugh was justified in telling his 20,000,000 listeners that the audience had been planted, and that the whole memorial was a sham from the democratic party in order to capitalize on the death of a senator that Limbaugh refered to as "Senator Welfare" before his death. Sorry, Rush. No worries, the word "capitalize" is still a trademark of the right wing, no threat here!

Central Michigan Life - Many upset with nickname controversy: "“If the saginaw chippewa indian tribe can hold a pow wow on campus wearing (a) head dress with feathers and cultural clothing representing their heritage,” “topper” said in the posting, “why could we not have one of the saginaw chippewa tribe (sic) members come to a game in the same attire for us to have a mascot.”"
Yeah, so anyone else see a problem with this, or is it just me?

Well, my internet is FINALLY back. It's been out for almost 3 days--as many days as it rained like hell in Mt. Pleasant. A lot has happened over the past 3 days, so I'd like to start out by talking about the seeds of hate. We all know what the end result of hate is. But the question that people rarely ask is where does it start. Hate does not begin at hate crimes, of course, so it must have a source somewhere. Does it begin at the KKK? No, that is also about mid-teir on the chronology of hate. No, ladies and gentlemen, hate begins here, with stereotypes and the ALLOWANCE of its perpetuation. CMU is allowing the continuance of stereotypes and bigotry by its non-action in the case of Jared Parko, the West Bloomfield freshman who dressed in a rediculous Native American mocking outfit at the homecomming game and the game after. Because CMU is chosing not to punish him, this opens the door up for more shows of ignorant pagentry. I don't advocate making an example of Parko--I am VERY against that school of thought that everything needs something to have an example made out of it to deter others from it--but I do believe it's time for CMU to sit down, make a Decisive move and set up a precedent for this kind of terrible racism and implement it consistently whenever it is breeched.
However, this does not mean I'm against free speech. In fact, I vehemently defend the first amendment right for everyone everywhere. However, I also know that stereotypes--though seemingly innocent--have terrible tragic results. I support the right of the KKK to march down Main Street, and the right of Jerry Falwell to tell me I'm goin to hell on TV--but I can also turn the TV off and avoid Main Street. But if I'm at a football game, I don't want to have to put up with that. I think that CMU should decree that, though this type of mindset is legal and can't be stopped; and their oppinions--as offensive as they are--are wlecome, this type of behavior is not. Because while it may just seem like "boys being boys" or "just innocent fun," but what it leads to is scary as hell. If CMU won't do anything about this, we should--as a student body--stand up and say "No, we won't put up with these attitudes and these actions. Your bigotry and ignorance is unwelcome here. And if noone will join me, then I guess I stand alone, but I promise I will not back down--I will fight for the side of right. I can't do otherwise.

Religion does not belong in politics. Politics, likewise muddy religion. Religion should be about spirituality, beliefs and how you treat your fellow human being. Not trying to be more conservative than the believer next to you. At my home parish, St. Stan's, in Wyandotte MI, I was turned off from a previously very involved life in my church by the COMPETITIVE nature at which the other parishoners there agressively pursued conservative piety. I knew it had gotten completely out of hand when "The Lady In Black" appeared. After installing 24 hour perpetual eucharistic adoration in our church, over-zealous fanaticism had reached a feverous pitch. Then suddenly a woman dressed completely in black wwould drive up in a Corola BLASTING 'Ave Maria' like some kids blast NWA. She would proceed into the church, saying nothing to anyone else there. When she would enter the eucharistic adoration chapel, she would promptly and silently prostrate herself in front of the blessed sacrament for about 45-65 minutes, and not MOVE WHATSOEVER. At the end of her "show of reverence" she would get up, and silently leave, blasting 'Ave Maria' at full volume. This was a young 20-something girl, mind you, who definitely looked out of place in black from head to toe, head covered in a black vail. We know she wasn't a consecrated nun, at least, because she had nothing to indicate an order. She was her own freaky, creepy, extreme order. That was when I realized that all of 'this' was no longer about worship, or God, but about looking more pious than anyone else. I promptly quit my youth group, gave my 3 weeks notice for the altar-serving group, and quit going to any special services that weren't ONLY sundays and holy days. Things had just gotten WAY too freaky for me. I feel much more comfortable at a St. Mary's Mt. Pleasant, or St. Cyprian's Riverview, but they have their extremists as well. I still have to come to terms with what Catholicism REALLY means to me. All I know is IT'S NOT THIS!Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Magazine / The Crusaders

CNN.com - U.S. helicopter crash kills 16 in Iraq - Nov. 2, 2003: "Deadliest day for U.S. troops in Iraq since March" When the hell is America going to realize we have another Vietnam on our hands? Not only is this war unjustified, but its getting out of control, and out of hand. We need to cut our losses NOW, and move on to try and repair our desastrously tarnished image in the rest of the world.

"“My message is infinitely more important than the Ten Commandments, because nobody is delivering it,” Phelps said.":
Does this make sense to anyone else? A Christian saying that what he says is more important than the Ten Commandments? Phelps--the country's BIGGEST anti-gay biggot--is no longer a Christian, but now a Phelpsist, because--in his mind--his bliefs have surpassed those of God's. He doesn't even NEED the bible anymore! This has gone from a religious issue, to an out-and-out HATE issue. He doesn't hate gays because the bible says so, he just HATES GAYS! And that is UNEQUIVOCABLY WRONG! Personally, I don't think that the bible DOES say to hate gays, but I do believe that it doesn't even matter whether or not it does, Phelps has distanced his own message from the message of the bible, and no longer has a leg to stand on.
